Holiday, June 2006

Based at Cockburn Mill cottage, near Duns, in the Scottish Borders

Photo technical note: most images taken with Fuji FinePix S5000, mostly at 6mp. At least one taken with a Nokia 6020 mobile telephone! The larger images (seen when you click on the thumbnails) are usually around 800x600 and about 500kb. The panoramas are much larger. If you don't have broadband, you might have a wait! Most panoramas were created by taking multiple images, then joining them together on the computer, using Canon PhotoStitch software.

Here's the brief 'diary' - the photos are here.

Sunday 11 June
Left home 06:35, arrived Cockburn Mill 13:05
Took photos of the cottage, then went for circular drive along B6355 and back down the A68, taking a few photos on the outward leg, including a Buzzard. Took photos of the river, geese, donkey and cow..

Monday 12 June
Raining at start of day. Went to Berwick upon Tweed. Up onto the town wall, and completed a circuit of the town. Drove through Eyemouth. Along the coast as the sun came out. Visited St. Abbs harbour with view to Abbs head. Visited Art Gallery Number Four and bought some pieces. Visited a disused harbour – a fishing village until 1946, saw Eider ducks diving.
Continue along coast, past Torness nuclear power station. Stopped in Dunbar to photograph the very pink parish church. Passed the amazing North Beriwick Law (very steep hill – probably a volcanic plug.)
Fantastic views across the Firth of Forth, particularly Bass Rock. Found Dalhousie Castle Hotel (venue for family wedding on Friday. Returned to Cockburn Mill - 140 mile trip.

Tuesday 13 June
Morning – Jim Clark Room, Duns. Bought souvenirs. Walked around Duns town centre, marvelled at the new Co-op, disgusted at the old co-op! Drove to Abbotsford, home of Sir Walter Scott. Interesting old house, like a mini-stately home. Did the Woodland walk. Bought a souvenir. Back to Cockburn by 5.30ish.

Wednesday 14 June
Berwick on Tweed to visit the Barracks. On to Paxton House, by Adam, almost entirely furnished with Chippendale. Small “stately home”. Walked round the gardens, riverside walk, woodland walk, and stopped in the bird and squirrel hide, photographed nuthatch red squirrel.

Thursday 15 June
Visited Scott’s View, took panoramic photos. On to Floors Castle at Kelso, had a snack and toured the house. Drove into Kelso, walked around the cobbled streets and large square. Bought a painting from The Art House. Drove on a circular route to see Newtown St Boswells, Melrose, Galashiels, Walkerburn, Innerleithen, Peebles, and back via an interesting B road, Selkirk.

Friday 16 June
Wandered along the Whiteadder Water, with Billie the dog, met Moo the cow again, photographed the decayed millwheels (two, different sized?). Afternoon/evening – drove to Dalhousie Castle for our nephew’s wedding.

Saturday 17 June
Left Cockburn Mill 09:20, arrived home 15:10.
